Spain won the Henri Delaunay Trophy in Vienna last night with a goal from Fernando Torres – and immediately jumped the queue to become favourites to win the 2010 World Cup.
It’s a tired old cliché – and Casillas and Co. may beg to differ after securing Spain’s first silverware for 44 years – but football was the real winner in the Ernst-Happel-Stadion last night, much as it has been for the last month. After Greece’s fairytale feat (playing fairly stale football) four years ago, it was refreshing to watch a truly talented side winning the tournament.
It was especially pleasing for most neutral onlookers not only because of Spain’s traditional tournament torment but also because Germany had reached this stage with few standout performances and, arguably, only one real world-class player (and how his team-mates must have fretted when it appeared he would miss the game).
Ballack’s Germany began the final with most of the possession and, for a while, a few doubters may have started to fear that Spain’s pitiful record was set to continue. However any apprehension was short-lived. For the next 80 minutes it was one-way red traffic, even without the prolific David Villa up front.
Villa’s erstwhile strike-partner, Fernando Torres seemed to revel in the lone role he often occupies for his club – and who wouldn’t, when you’ve got Fabregas, Xavi, Silva and Iniesta supplying the ammunition. The Liverpool hit man fired a warning shot in the 22nd minute when he rose to plant a header onto Lehmann’s right-hand post and four minutes later he was back to deliver what turned out to be the tournament-winning goal.
After a perfectly weighted through ball from Xavi, Torres outpaced Lahm, even affording to take a heavy touch before rounding the left-back, and then lofted a sumptuous chip over the advancing Lehmann. The ball found the far corner of the net as the striker wheeled away to celebrate.
In reality this could have been a cricket score. Germany’s only chance fell to Ballack but his scuffed volley skidded wide of Casillas’ goal. Spain meanwhile could have taken the lead as early as the 13th minute when Lehmann’s instincts were all that prevented Christoph Metzelder scoring a freak own-goal after a teasing Iniesta cross. David Silva then missed a good opportunity on the volley and Ramos and Senna also went close in the second half.
German teams of old would have made the Spaniards pay for their profligacy – but not this one. Despite the introduction of Kuranyi and Gomez, they hardly threatened in the final third and Spain were allowed to play out a victory that, in truth, was rather more comfortable than the score line suggested.
So Spain are the new champions of Europe and, with a young team and the talents of Torres, Villa and Fabregas, who’s to say they won’t take it one further in South Africa in 2010?
UEFA EURO 2008™ has been a wonderful showcase for the beautiful game with heavenly football, knife-edge endings and goals to die for. However now’s your chance to outdo possibly the best European Championships so far. Select a team of your choice – whether or not they qualified for the actual tournament – and take them all the way to the Ernst-Happel-Stadion in Vienna and put in a performance even Spain would be proud of.
Me? I’m off to right some wrongs with Gerrard, Rooney and Co…

Half Time Report: Poland have threatened the most, Austria's forwards are terrible. Earlier in the game, fifteen minutes gone Zurawski hits the crossbar form 6 yards out. He makes it right though on the 34th minute as the ball is chipped over the keeper for him to finish on the goal line.
(I'm getting *** sick of this game. It's impossible to defend, teams like San Marino can pass it around you for *** sake. This is getting ridiculous, every tackle I do is a bloudy foul)
Well Austria had been poor until the last ten minutes. Continuenly getting down the wings and putting balls in. It finally payed off in the 92nd minute, when Lasnik, who came on in the 50th minute. Ran the ball past two defenders and slotted it across for Kuliic to send it home. Poland must be deeply upset.
Good news for Austria though, as Croatia and Germany drew 2-2.

I've enjoyed your blogs throughout the tournament. This will be my last challenge to do of yours, the team I will select will be the tournament co-host. Austria, and try make that fairytale.
I'll be doing it on World Class dificulty as always. Instead of the match reports I enjoy doing, throughout the Group Stages and Knockout stages (if I get there) I'll just display the scores and goalscorers, while I then do a match report in the final if I get there.

Half Time Report: It's been all possesion here. A few chances for both teams. Austria controlled the game, passing the ball around the Croatian half for a good 20 minutes or so. But towards the end of the half, Croatia finally gelled together but rarely threatened on goal. Whoever gets the first goal, will set the tone of this match. Let's hope so.
Full Time (0-0): A boring second half, nothing really to talk about other than two chances. On the 80th minute, Eduardo was clear on goal. It's amazing he was fit enough to play in the tournament. One on one with the keeper, keeper took Eduardo's legs. Should of been a penalty, instead the ball goes out of play and it's a goal kick.
On the 90th minute, last seconds of the game. Ivanschitz cross goes to the penalty box, the incoming Linz heads it just over the bar as he raised above the defenders. Austria can be happy with a point though.
