Before UEFA EURO 2008™ gets underway we want to know who you think will be an unexpected star in the tournament. We know the obvious players who will do well Fabregas, Torres, Kranjcar and Ronaldo to name a few. But do you know of any little gems who will use being in this European shop window to get themselves a big transfer deal? Here is a quick Football World guide of who to look out for in the different Groups.
Group A and Portugal’s most obvious star will be Ronaldo but we all know about him. However if you look into Portugal’s squad a few other young players may shine as defences keep an eye out for Portugal’s main danger man. Nani needs to step out of Ronaldo’s shadow both for club and country and could find this the perfect opportunity. João Moutinho who plays for Sporting Lisbon may also relish the bigger stage to show off his pinpoint passing and great engine that allows him to play from box-to-box especially as Portugal are all about attacking football. Hugo Almeida is everything you don’t expect from a Portuguese striker. He is 24, tall, strong and powerful in the air. With the quality of players around him Almeida should be able to make his mark in this tournament.
Group B provides a few young players who may catch the eye. Andreas Ivanschita is dubbed the ‘Austrian Beckham’ by local media but Sebastian Prödl may be the key player for Austria as recent performances suggest they will have a lot of defending to do. Prödl is only 20 years old and has actually scored twice in a friendly against Holland so he may also threaten other defences. Croatia’s Luka Modric big money move to Tottenham and his influence in helping eliminate England means he is already making headlines. This competition provides him with a perfect platform for everyone to watch his playmaking skills and to prove the hype is justified. Germany’s Mario Gomez is only 22 and with the loss of form to Podolski has taken his chance well scoring six goals in nine games for Germany, definitely a player to watch out for.
Group C includes France who have chosen a very young team leaving some established players most notable Trezeguet at home. Hatem Ben Arfa is a player linked with a move to Arsenal, he has been burdened with the ‘new Zidane’ tag for a few years. However he has been excellent this season and can play wide left or as another striker. The real star for France could be Karim Benzema who scored a stunning goal against Man Utd this season. His club Lyon, have put a £70m price tag on him so they certainly expect bigger and better things from their striker.
The Netherlands Klass Jan Huntelaar may also use this competition to secure a big money move to one of Europe’s bigger clubs. At 24, the centre forward who finished top goal scorer in the Dutch league only has to prove he can score on the biggest stage to start a bidding war with Alex Ferguson already a long-term admirer.
Group D provides us with a few of the Russians players. Andrei Arshavin was voted the man of the match in the UEFA Cup final against Rangers setting up both of his side’s two goals. Although he is 26 and not that young the fact that he has spent his career in Russia few people will be aware of how good he is especially in regard to his control and excellent vision. The 22-year-old first choice goalkeeper for CSKA Moscow Igor Akinfeev may also be a huge star if he can hold off competition for the number one jersey from Zenit St Petersburg keeper Malafeev.
Birmingham City’s Sebastian Larsson is Sweden’s youngest squad player and one of the only highlights of a relegation season. Alex McLeish is determined to keep the midfielder but if Larsson’s strong passing and clinical set pieces help Sweden qualify out of the group stages ahead of Russia he may have a job on his hands.
